Door Designs

Your door design will come down to what you want from your commercial door and what features you want to see. We offer fully custom door design services and can create or fabricate the door that you envision for your space. From construction to features and even the finish, our door technicians will design and build your door from the ground up.

Door Construction

The first step in any commercial door design is choosing the material the door will be constructed from. Our door panels come in several options, including extruded aluminum, cold-formed steel, framed steel, stainless steel, fibreglass, and wood. Our glass doors use safety glass with an aluminum profile. Each material is going to have its own features, and depending on your specific use case, your material options may be limited by code. For instance, steel doors are typically used for fire-rated doors or major egress routes, while wood, glass, or almost any material can be used for interior doors such as director-level offices.

Door Finish

Next, you will want to consider the different finish options for your door, which will change the way your panels and overall door look in the light. The industry standard for most commercial doors is 204-R1 Class II Clear and 313-R1 Class I dark bronze. However, you can choose from several finishes, including traditional paint and other anodized finishes. If you choose a cladding material that includes stainless steel and Muntz metal doors, these are available in both brushed and polished finishes.

Vestibule Depth

Next, confirm your vestibule depth if you plan to add this feature to your door installation service. The typical door setup requires a minimum distance of nine feet between two doors, but best practice is to install them at least 12 feet apart. 12 feet is preferred as this will allow your vestibule to act as a traditional airlock while also giving you the room needed for motion sensors or infrared detection to work properly and function as it is designed.

Design Life

Every door has a specific lifespan that depends on the environment you put it in. Think about it this way: an interior door will have a longer shelf life than an exterior door battling wind, snow, and rain every day. The design life of your door depends on your application, environmental conditions, maintenance, and use, and you should always source any needed replacement parts from the original equipment manufacturer.

Door Features

Finally, you will choose the door hardware that will complete your commercial door system. This includes everything from the door handle to the locks, and even the actuators paired with the door to make it operate. We offer standardized choices, as well as a wide selection of customizable options, so you can make the door features your own, from brushed steel to something a little more luxurious like solid brass.

Door Sizes

When it comes to commercial doors, door size matters. Below are some of our standard size charts, and they will all fit the typical door opening in your building. If you need a custom door size, our team will work with you to find a solution that will work for your specific building.

Standard Commercial Door Sizes

The standard commercial door size for a single door is 36 inches wide by 84 inches tall, with a thickness of 1 and ¾ inches. However, we also see other standardized commercial door sizes, including 32-inch-wide doors and larger doors up to 48 inches wide. You also have some flexibility in height, as some standardized doors come in 80-inch variants.

Automatic Sliding Door Sizing

Automatic door sizing comes down to a few different varieties. Single slide packages range from a net slide opening of 36 inches all the way to 48 inches for those looking for a wider slide. In comparison, the bi-part slide packages range from 42 inches to 96 inches.

Automatic Swinging Door Sizing

Automatic swinging door sizes depend on a few factors, including the operator you use to make it happen. However, single doors range from an OHC net swing panel of 31 ½ inches to 43 ½ inches, while double-door systems range from 66 ½ inches to 90 ½ inches.

Automatic Folding Door Sizing

Automatic folding doors are another great option, especially if you are tight on space. These door systems range from 32 inches to 76 inches in net fold opening, depending on whether it is a single or bi-fold door and the overall net breakout.

Frequently Asked Questions

Getting you reliable solutions & honest answers.

  • What is the most common standard commercial door size?

The most common standard commercial door size is 36 inches wide and 84 inches tall. These doors are called 3070 or 3084 configurations in the door industry.

  • What are the standard heights for commercial doors?

We offer two standard commercial door heights in Edmonton, Alberta: 80 inches (6 feet, 8 inches) or 84 inches (7 feet).

  • What is the difference between nominal and actual size?

The nominal size of a door refers to the general opening, while the actual size is the door size that fits within the frame. To put this into perspective, a 32-inch standard door will have a nominal size of 31 ¾ inches to give space for the door to be installed.

  • Are commercial doors pre-hung or knock-down frames?

Most commercial doors are sold as knock-down frames, as they are designed for on-site anchoring or mechanical fastening, especially if the door is a commercial steel door or fire-rated unit. However, other doors are pre-hung, especially internal doors that are not part of the egress route.
