    They can be, but it really depends on the door’s specific design and whether it is properly sized. Low-energy revolving doors operate at a slower speed and have activation features that give those with mobility challenges ample time to enter. If it is a larger door or a new installation, the door can be ADA-compliant. However, in many older buildings, the doorframe size does not accommodate wheelchairs, strollers, and walkers, and a new, larger door would need to be installed to meet accessibility requirements.

    Yes, for those looking for an energy-efficient door, a low-energy revolving door is the best option. These doors are always open and always closed, creating an airlock that prevents outdoor air from entering the building. Low-energy revolving doors have several advantages over full-power revolving doors, including improved energy efficiency and accessible features that are great for new families with strollers, those with mobility aids, and individuals with accessibility concerns. 

  • Can a revolving door be an emergency exit?

    A traditional revolving door cannot be used as an egress route per the Alberta Code, as it cannot move people quickly enough through the space in an emergency. That is why we often see swing doors located near or beside a manual revolving door. However, some of our modern low-energy revolving doors feature a break-out or collapsible leaf system that can be manually pushed flat to create a wide swinging exit door. This collapsible leaf meets local Edmonton building and fire safety codes and can be considered an egress route, removing the need for an additional swing door.
