There are a ton of types of actuators, and each provides you with a different set of actions that are able to trigger your low-energy door. All of these actuators meet the definition of a “knowledgeable act” and, unlike the sensors that activate automated doors, are designed for user accessibility and safety in terms of function and usability.

Push Buttons


Push buttons are the most popular option for those seeking a tried-and-tested actuator for low-energy doors. Available in hardwired and wireless options, these buttons are easy to use for both seated and standing individuals of various abilities and disabilities. The large push buttons are designed with ADA compliance in mind and will feature either the International Symbol of Access, otherwise known as the wheelchair symbol or a Push-to-Open message. Our options also include high color contrast variations to improve the usability for those with low-vision.

Column Mounted


Column-mounted buttons, also called column switches or column push plates, are long vertical buttons often used as actuators in public spaces. These long buttons use the same technology as push buttons and range from 20 to 92 cm (9 to 36 inches), so they can be installed as a single button and remain code-compliant. These column-mounted buttons are an exception to the Alberta Building Code standard for actuators, which requires two buttons at different heights.

RFID or Card Scanners

In these cases, we can work with you to connect RFID for phones or fobs, card scanners or even biometric scanners to act as your actuators in your office.   • Does the Alberta Code include any specific provisions on actuators?

    Yes, the Alberta Building Code mandates that push buttons or wave sensors need to be installed in pairs. The first one should be installed at 800 mm above the floor and is designed for users of mobility aids in a seated orientation, such as wheelchair users. The second one should be installed 1,100 mm above the floor and designed for users who can walk or use a mobility device. The only exception to this rule is when you install a column-mounted push button that spans the required actuator heights.

  • What is the preferred actuator for a low-energy door?

    This will really depend on your use case. But the most popular option is the traditional push-button actuator, available in either circular or square shapes. For those who are concerned about hygiene or have a setting where touchless is best, the wave sensor is normally the preferred method. If you are in a more secure setting, an RFID reader connected to a key card, fob, or even a cell phone is the most popular option, as it blends security with accessibility.

  • What happens during an emergency or fire alarm?

    Low-energy doors are equipped with specialized systems that will release the door in the event of an emergency or a fire alarm in your building. If the operator is activated by the building's alarm system, the electric strike will release, allowing the door to operate as a manual door and be opened or closed, depending on your door’s specific orientation.

  • What is a safety sensor?

    A safety sensor is used in automatic doors to stop the door from closing on an object or a person. These sensors will detect a person or thing and reopen the door to allow the item to be moved. These sensors not only protect the low-energy automatic door but also prevent injuries to users who may not be fast enough to avoid the door closing on them as they try to access the door. These sensors are designed to meet ANSI, NBC and BHMA A156.19 standards.

  • How do touchless wave sensors work?

    Touchless wave sensors are low-range infrared or microwave sensors that detect movement or objects within 2-30 cm (12 inches) of the sensor. They are used primarily in high-traffic and sterile environments such as hospitals and commercial washrooms. Many leading touchless wave sensors can be adjusted for their detection zones, sensitivity, and hold time to meet your specific layout.

  • Are there any options other than a two-button accessible actuator?

    Yes, per the Alberta Building Code, you can also opt for a single vertical-column button. This button will need to stretch between the two height requirements to be compliant. When we install these bollard buttons, we will set them at 25 cm above the floor and extend them to 95 cm to ensure the buttons meet the standard during any potential inspection.
