Two Activation Height Requirements

When considering activation installations, the Alberta Accessibility Design Guide recommends placing two triggers at different heights. The reason for this is quite simple, it is all about making access easy for all. For those who are able-bodied or can stand, the activator should be at around average waist height, between 900 mm and 1100 mm, to allow for easy triggering. While the second button is designed for those who are seated and will be between 150 mm and 300 mm from the floor. As well, the placement should be outside the door swing path but still close enough to allow those with strollers, walkers, or wheelchairs enough time to hit the button and access the doorway before it closes, typically between 150 mm and 200 mm from the door frame.

    For most of our clients, the swing door is the most popular door type to retrofit with an automated door operator, as it is a simple addition that works with existing hinges and most frames. However, swing doors are not the only type of door that can be retrofitted with an automatic door operator. We have worked with clients across Edmonton to add door operators on double doors, interior hallway doors, and even commercial entrance doors.

  • Are there any building codes or accessibility requirements I should be aware of when retrofitting doors?

    When retrofitting a door used for accessibility compliance, you will need to adhere to the National Building Code - Alberta Edition, Section 3.8. This section deals with the specifics of doors. To be a compliant accessible door, your retrofitted door will need to have:   

    • A clear opening of at least 810 mm.
    • Thresholds that do not exceed 13 mm and are beveled.
    • Lever-type hardware installed on the door.
