Low-energy automatic swing door operator services in Edmonton, AB.
We make automatic door operator installations easy.
The conventional swing door has dominated the exterior and interior door industry for years. However, when you are looking to make your swing doors more functional and accessible, the building modernization you should invest in is a low-energy automatic swing door. With a variety of use cases and ease of retrofitting, these automatic swing doors can be a significant upgrade to your commercial property without the high capital costs associated with other door systems.
What is a low-energy automatic swing door?
A low-energy swing door is an upgrade on the conventional swing door that we have all used in our homes and offices. As an automatic door, a low-energy swing door will be activated by pushing a button, scanning a keycard or fob, or activating a sensor. In the professional door space, this is called activated by a “knowing act”. Once activated, the door will open automatically and close after a preset period via the low-energy operator. These doors are ideal for any commercial space, as they open and close at slow speeds and require minimal force to operate, making them fully ADA-compliant.

Why choose a low-energy swing door operator?
For many commercial properties, a low-energy door is the ideal retrofit or investment to keep their property modern and accessible for clients, staff and users.
ADA-Compliant
For those who are looking to make their commercial property more accessible, a low-energy swing door is a great investment. These doors meet all ADA and Alberta Building Code standards when paired with properly installed activations on both sides of the door. With its slow, predictable speed, those using wheelchairs, walkers, or even strollers can easily use the entranceway without concern.
Safety First
Whether you are looking for an external or internal access swing door, safety and security go hand in hand. With a variety of activations to pair with the door, including RFID readers, key readers, and even biometric scanners, you can ensure that those who need access have it through simplified, straightforward access control.
Simplified Retrofit & Servicing
Unlike other options on the market, a low-energy swing door is easy to maintain, service and repair as needed. With simple components designed for new installs and retrofits, you will be hard-pressed to find a more cost-effective upgrade to your conventional swing doors.
Surface Mount VS Concealed Mount
Choosing the right mount for your low-energy swing door is one of the most important aspects of our retrofit and installation services. A surface mount is a conventional operator installation that you have seen on thousands of doors. The operator, arm, and motor box are bolted directly to the face of the door and are easily accessible for maintenance and replacement. In comparison, the concealed mount embeds the motor and low-energy operator in the header, creating a seamless, clean look. This option is a little less popular, given the complexity of installation and the cost associated with the build-out, since concealed mounts are typically used only for new builds and luxury commercial construction.

What is the difference between low-energy and fully automatic swing doors?
There are a few key differences between low-energy and fully automatic swing doors. Low-energy doors need to be activated via a “knowing act,” which can be a push of a button, a wave of a hand over a sensor, or a tap of a key card on a key reader. In comparison, a fully automatic door will simply open if it senses someone approaching the entrance. Another key difference is the speed and force of the door; fully automatic doors open faster and with greater force, while low-energy doors open more slowly and with a timed closure.
How long does a low-energy automatic swing door remain open?
This can be programmed, but in general, a low-energy door will remain open for 10 to 30 seconds. However, these operators are customizable, and we can adjust the closing time as you need. For barrier-free washrooms, for instance, we suggest at least 30 seconds, while for building entrances, it could be less, depending on your specific building security standards.
Can I still operate a low-energy door manually?
Yes, you can still operate your low-energy door as a manual door in both push and pull functions without damaging the operator. This is why so many commercial and multifamily properties choose low-energy operators, as they are able to be used as a manual door while also providing the accessibility features of a powered door with a push button or sensor.
Are the energy demands high for a low-energy swing door?
No, if you are worried about utility bills, a low-energy door operator will not have a high electricity demand and is considered extremely efficient. Today’s modern operators will be roughly equivalent to running a window air conditioner for 30 minutes in terms of overall electricity use over a busy day.
Are low-energy doors considered accessible?
Yes, low-energy doors are one of the ideal door types for accessibility. As they open at a controlled, predictable speed, they are great for those using mobility aids or strollers. As well, when paired with an accessible actuator like a key fob reader, push button, or wave sensor, they will be easily opened and closed by users. For ADA compliance, low-energy doors are the preferred option for barrier-free washrooms and barrier-free entranceways.
How often are low-energy doors serviced?
Low-energy doors should be serviced by a professional, certified technician, such as those at Accesio, at least once a year to check for potential equipment wear and tear and lubrication of chains and other parts. Servicing intervals should be increased if the door is in constant use, and for some clients, this means servicing every six months. This regular service should also include an annual inspection to ensure your automatic door system complies with ANSI A156.19 and National Building Code standards.
Are automatic door operators mandated?
Automatic door operators are required by the Alberta Building Code at most barrier-free entrances and public buildings. Naturally, some buildings are grandfathered in, such as older buildings, but for most commercial and public buildings in Alberta, you will need an automatic or power-assisted door at the primary barrier-free public entrance and in a barrier-free on-site washroom.
